Why choose Dr. Starkman for cheek augmentation?

As a highly specialized head and neck surgeon with further double board-certified Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Starkman is especially suited to perform your facial implant surgery.

When choosing a surgeon for facial implants, it is critical to find someone with a specialized knowledge of facial anatomy and aesthetics. There are many details to facial implant surgery such as matching the size and type of implant to the features of a patient’s face. Under-qualified surgeons who are unfamiliar with modern techniques can select inappropriate implants or place them incorrectly. This leads to unnatural, asymmetric, or “overdone” results. Dr. Starkman is properly qualified and experienced to ensure a natural and beautiful result from facial implant surgery.

Ideal candidates for cheek augmentation

Ideal candidates for cheek augmentation are adults who:

  • Would like better contours in their cheeks
  • Have age-related volume loss in their cheeks
  • Have naturally flat or hollow cheeks
  • Have lost a large amount of weight, leading to deflated cheeks
  • Have asymmetry in their cheeks caused by genetics, a health condition, or an accident
  • Are in good general health

Dermal fillers vs. cheek implants

Dermal filler injections can be a great option for patients who want to avoid the time and expense of surgical implants. They are also a good option for those who require mild or subtle enhancement of the cheeks. Because the results of dermal fillers are temporary, they can help patients get a better idea of the amount of volume and lift they want before switching to surgical cheek augmentation. Cheek implants are better for those who want a longer-lasting solution and are willing to take the time to recover after surgery.

Surgical technique during cheek augmentation

Prior to your cheek augmentation in Scottsdale, Dr. Starkman will perform a detailed assessment to decide on a customized treatment plan that is ideal for your unique cosmetic goals. During your initial consultation, the two of you will select your treatment method: dermal fillers or cheek implants.

Dermal fillers treatment

Dermal fillers can be completed in our Scottsdale, AZ office as an outpatient procedure in an estimated 20 – 30 minutes. Before the treatment, the points of injection will be marked along the hollows of the cheeks. Then, the fillers will be injected carefully to the selected sites and massaged to create an even fullness. You will be able to leave immediately following the procedure and continue your daily routine.

Cheek implants treatment

Surgical cheek augmentation is also an outpatient procedure that is performed in our on-site surgical facility. Patients are usually put under IV Sedation Anesthesia, allowing them to still breathe on their own. Once you are prepped, small incisions will be created inside the gums so a pocket can be made over the cheekbone. The implants will be securely placed, and the incisions will be closed. Cheek implant surgery usually takes about an hour, and you will be released to a family member or friend to recover at home.

What to expect following cheek augmentation

After surgical cheek augmentation, you will probably experience bruising, swelling, and tightness for around 1 – 2 weeks following your procedure. Vigorous activity that will put strain on your facial muscles (like lifting weights) should be avoided for about 7 – 10 days. Optimal healing generally is achieved in about two months, but the results last for many years.

Following dermal filler injections in the cheeks, the mid-face may feel sore or tender with minor swelling for about 3 – 5 days. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to lessen your discomfort. Optimal results are typically seen in 10 – 14 days. Continuous sessions will be required since fillers are a temporary option.

FAQ

How much does cheek augmentation cost?

The cost for cheek augmentation will vary, depending on which method you choose and whether you have any other procedures or treatments done. During your consultation, Dr. Starkman will go over all your options with you and help you decide on your best treatment plan. Remember, it is much more important to choose a plastic surgeon with training and experience than to look for the cheapest option. Your cheek augmentation is an important investment decision.

What type of dermal fillers do you use for cheek augmentation?

Dr. Starkman uses the Juvéderm product line of dermal fillers, particularly Voluma for the cheeks. Voluma, which is a formulation of hyaluronic acid, can enhance the cheeks by filling in hollow or sunken areas beneath the surface of your skin. He also uses Radiesse dermal filler in some cases. It is important to remember that these are both temporary solutions. However, with routine treatment from Dr. Starkman, your cheeks will look younger, fuller, and more refined.

What if I have an asymmetrical face?

Facial asymmetry is actually quite common. In fact, even some celebrities and models have fairly uneven facial features. However, if you are especially bothered by your facial asymmetry or feel that an imbalance in the volume or height of your cheekbones is too noticeable, Dr. Starkman can assess your options. Call Starkman Facial Plastic Surgery today to find out if fillers or cheek implants could be the answer you're seeking.

Can I have a fat grafting performed to fill in my cheeks?

Dr. Starkman does use advanced fat grafting techniques to restore volume in the soft tissues of the face, including the cheeks. The fat grafting technique can create a more youthful shape for your cheeks and may feel more natural to the touch than an implant. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Starkman for an exam and consultation at our office in Scottsdale, AZ to determine which method is right for you.
